Mass spectrometry (MS) can deliver meaningful data that is complementary to genomic data and helps to increase the current understanding of the COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The importance and urgency of the pandemic and the role that mass spectrometrists can play has resulted in the formation of a COVID-19 MS Coalition, focusing on molecular changes in patients’ blood, the discovery of new biomarkers and inferring the molecular characteristic of the virus’ spike protein and other antigens.
The aim of the coalition is to use mass spectrometry to reduce the harm caused by the SARS-Cov2 virus and to better understand it’s mode of action. Secondly sharing of sample collection and processing protocols and all data that is obtained to maximise the benefit for all.
MS Vision has a strong track record of modifying Qtof mass spectrometers for high mass applications, including the detection and characterization of viruses, virus capsids and the analysis of their loading as well as non-covalent complex analysis in previous SARS-CoV research [Biochemical Journal (2020) 477 1009–1019].
